About Us
The Sisters arrived in the Republic of South Africa, on the 26th August, 1994, at the invitation of Rt. Rev; Archbishop George Daniel and Fr. Charles Kupperlweiser of the Archdiocese of Pretoria. During the previous two years, a farm had been bought by the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. Upon the arrival of the Sisters, this farm was not established as regards to apostolates, and there was only a house and some old buildings which were used to milk and in which the cows were housed. As such, the Sisters were employed at Sizanani Village to work with the handicapped children, whilst the first block of Alfonso children’s home was being constructed through generous donations received from Stitching Porticus – Netherlands and Pontifical Opus A Propagation Fidei – Rome. Through the hard work of our pioneer Sisters, the first house was completed and the first orphan and abused children were received at the home through the Social development. As our concept of place of safety, became known and the South African Police Service began arriving with abandoned children at our door step in the night.
In 2001, the second wing was constructed through donations received from Kindermissionwerke, Germany and Direction Nationale des OPM – Suisse, Italy. Our Sisters continued working tirelessly so that the Alfonso Children’s Home could offer holistic and residential services to the homeless children from as far as Cape Town, Boshkop, Zithobeni, Callinan, Ikangala and Dark City within our caring environment.
Alfonso Children’s Home has a conducive atmosphere. The majority of the children come traumatized but eventually they get love and affection from the Sisters and the stake holders. They become happier and began to strive.
